Helping Latino/Hispanic Families Care for their Loved Ones

The El Portal Northwest Program has been an intricate part of the Alzheimer’s Association for over a year. We have had great successes in the Latino/Hispanic community providing both information and education about maintaining a healthy brain as well as educating people about the risk and challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the Latino/Hispanic population is the fastest growing in King County. Some El Portal Familystudies suggest that Latinos/Hispanics may be at greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s and related dementias than other ethnic or racial groups because there is a greater incidence of diabetes with this population. There is also a growing body of evidence showing that vascular disease risk factors (including diabetes) may increase the incidence for Alzheimer’s disease and stroke-related dementia, making this a matter of particular concern.

With growing numbers of people with Alzheimer’s and dementia in the Latino/Hispanic community, what are families doing to cope with caring for their loved ones? The El Portal Northwest Program offers guidance for family caregivers by providing education about the disease process, coping strategies for any challenges, and ways to improve communication. Helpful information in English or Spanish is provided through individualized consultation. Supportive services and resources are offered to help families continue caring for their loved ones in the best way possible.

Support Group Begins

As our program grows we are identifying increasing needs within the Latino/Hispanic community of King County. One of those needs is the lack of a family caregiver support group for Spanish speakers. We began a support group May 2007 which has proven to be a wonderful way for caregivers to share their feelings and find solutions to their particular situations. The support group meets the third Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. at Southeast Senior center 4655 S. Holly Seattle, WA 98118. There is no charge to participate in the support group or to participate in El Portal Northwest. If you wish to join this group or if you have any questions about El Portal Northwest, please contact Janet Ceballos at (206) 356-0173.
