NCOA/Caresource Healthy Aging Briefing Series
Dennis Kenny, President
The response to the NCOA/Caresource Healthy Aging Briefing Series has been phenomenal. We have had the opportunity to air three briefings to date: Prescription for Physical Activity by Christine Fordyce, M.D., Medication Use and Older Adults by Kathleen Cameron R, Ph., M.P.H., and Medicare Preventive Health Services by Marisa Scala-Roley. All of the briefings reached full capacity plus for registration and were given strong follow-up evaluations. The archived Power Point slides are available for viewing online at www.ncoa.org/briefings. Our next 30-minute NCOA/Caresource Healthy Aging Briefing is set for Thursday, September 22, 2005, from 1:30 - 2:00 p.m. (Eastern time), when Janet Ohene-Frempong, MS will speak on The Savvy Health Care Consumer. This session is geared toward helping professionals guide their seniors toward becoming better health advocates for themselves. Practical strategies on senior assertiveness, awareness of rights, and better communication skills in relating to health care providers will be covered. Overcoming communication barriers such as illiteracy and hearing impairment will also be discussed. To register, email briefings@ncoa.org by September 20. All first-time briefing session participants will receive a free copy of the Aging in Stride guide to healthy aging and eldercare (one per registrant). The next topic for the Healthy Aging Briefings will be Senior Centers on October 20. Check the NCOA website in October for details on registration.
