Arkansas NBS Update

The Arkansas Department of Health previously screened for four disorders/conditions: Congenital Hypothyroidism, Phenylketonuria (PKU), Sickle Cell Anemia, and Galactosemia.

Beginning July 1, 2008, the Arkansas Newborn Screening Program expanded to include all of the 29 Primary “Core Conditions,” on the recommended uniform screening panel, including Cystic Fibrosis.

The fee per screening increased from $14.86 per baby tested to $89.25 to cover the cost of the expanded laboratory testing and the follow-up program.

The Arkansas Department of Health co-branded the March of Dimes Parent brochure which is being given to parents of newborns.

The Arkansas Department of Health created a Newborn Screening web page located at the following web address:  http://www.arnewbornscreening.com/.   The web page contains the Media Release announcing the expanded Newborn Screening Program.  The web page will have information for parents and health professionals and links to the March of Dimes and Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
