Stay Focused on the Flu Virus
Therese Frare
This Spring we were confronted with a troubling flu virus called H1N1 (originally called swine flu). The White House recently advised, as the fall flu season approaches, that we all continue to prepare in order to lessen the effects of the virus on our communities. Visit www.flu.gov for one-stop access to U.S. Government H1N1, avian and pandemic flu information. The U.S. Government is currently estimating that a safe and effective H1N1 vaccine will be available by mid-October. But the most critical steps to mitigating the effects of the flu season will take place in our homes and communities. Wash your hands regularly. Take the necessary precautions to stay healthy and if you do get sick, stay home from work and school. While educating your staff on best practices, consider showing IlluminAge’s video Break the Chain; Your Role in Preventing the Spread of Infection. Feedback we have received has called the video “Clear. Concise. Comprehensive. And an excellent job of covering everything.”
The Break the Chain video and 16-page presenter’s guide covers: - What infections are and how they are spread – including bloodborne, airborne, and contact infections. (16 minutes)
- An employee’s role in preventing infections – including handwashing, following correct procedures, personal protective equipment, maintaining a safe environment and teamwork. (13 minutes)
- Discussion supplements for long term care and assisted living, home health and hospice, and home care. (19 minutes)
We all share the responsibility for flu preparedness. Now is the time to get ready.
