Message from the Outgoing President

Phil PetersI want to thank all of the members of KAG and the Board for their support while I have been President this past year. It is a widely known secret that my goal all along has been to be a Past-President of KAG! I now get to join that august body of thoughtful, venerated folks:  I imagine hours of deep contemplation and thought, sort of like a long nap.

This has been a challenging year for all of our organizations, and we were very worried that the downturn in the economy might jeopardize our annual conference.  We had heard that many groups would not be able to contribute as much, send as many folks or participate at the levels they have in the past. But we hadn't factored in how the leadership of our conference chair, Michelle Hines, and the great support of Bowling Green and the BRADD would rise to the fore. So, in this challenging year, we ended up with one of the most vibrant, well-attended and exciting conferences we've had in a long time. My sincere thanks go to all of the KAG members who worked so hard to make this conference a success and highlight of the year.

But the challenges aren't over. Kentucky is facing severe budget woes that negatively impact a multitude of vital services needed by our older residents. Our leadership changes, but our commitment as an organization to be a strong advocate for older Kentuckians doesn't. In the past we've fought to protect and expand important state programs that help grandparents who are raising their grandchildren; programs that help people continue to live at home; programs such as in-home care and home delivered meals and vital transportation services. All of these services and others are under threat again, and KAG will be fighting to protect them. As a KAG member, please stay current on what is happening in Frankfort, and look for the KAG alerts that can let you know ways you can help our voice be heard.

So again, thanks for the opportunity to serve as President and look for me lurking at next year's silent auction.
