Special Days in September
Labor Day Labor Day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the workers who have made our country strong and prosperous. The vital force of labor has added the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known. It has also brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. The nation pays tribute to American workers on Labor Day because they have created much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership of this country. Thank you for all your hard work. Here are some interesting facts about American workers: - 152.8 million people work (82.1 million men and 70.7 million women)
- 7.6 million people work more than one job
- 10.6 million people are self-employed
- 28% of people work more than 40 hours a week
- 8% of people work more than 60 hours a week
Patriot Day Patriot Day occurs each year on September 11th commemorating the nearly 3,000 people who died in the September 11th, 2001 attacks. President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001, as a day of remembrance. The American flag is to be flown on this day at half-staff, at home and abroad, and Americans are to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. to mark the first plane crash. Rosh Hashanah Rosh Hashanah is commonly referred to as the Jewish New Year. In the Bible, it is referred to as "the day of the blowing of the horn or Shofar." During this holiday, one usually eats a festive meal of challah (a special braided bread that represents the manna which fell from the heavens, while the Israelites were wandering in the desert), apples dipped in honey, fish heads, and pomegranates. This is the first of the high holidays beginning ten days of self-examination and repentance beginning with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur.
