Veteran's Day is November 11, 2008

Veteran's Day was originally called Armistice Day, and it commemorated the end of WWI on November 11, 1918.  Fighting stopped at 11:00 a.m., on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1919, on the first anniversary of the WWI armistice (Latin, meaning "arms stopping"), President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation expressing pride in the heroism of those who died during the war. Business stopped for two minutes starting at 11am, and it later became customary to observe two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m. Many states made Armistice Day a state holiday in the 1920s and 1930s, and in 1938, Congress declared it a federal holiday. In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day to honor those who had served in WWII (1939-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953).

Throughout this Nation's history, America's soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and coastguardsmen have bravely answered the call to defend our freedom, to aid our friends and allies, and to turn back aggressors. We can never fully repay our debt of gratitude to the more than 650,000 American service members who died in battle or the 1.4 million who were wounded. We can, however, recognize and thank the 25 million veterans still living today.

Thanksgiving Turkey

Some gobblers are white, and some are black.
All look the same hanging on the rack.
Cook it until it's a golden brown;
a nicer bird you've never found.

Some like the white, and some like the darker.
It's a nice way to give you a choice.
With all the trimmings, what a selection,
how could there be any rejection?

With cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie,
there is no reason to be shy.
So dive in and enjoy the feast.
Thank goodness the Pilgrims landed in the East.
