TimeSlips: Creative Storytelling with People with Dementia

Model programs are emerging all over the world now, as we begin to think more creatively about creative engagement.

Alzheimer's patient and friendAnn Basting, who founded and has run one such program (www.timeslips.org) for over 10 years, profiles 10 programs (music, art, dance, conversation, photography, etc.) in her new book Forget Memory: Creating Better Lives for People with Dementia. She shares those inspiring models in her talk and challenges the field to recreate itself as a place where spirits are nourished rather than emptied.

A recent study shows us that TimeSlips improves the quality and quantity of engagement between staff and residents in nursing homes.  How can a simple storytelling method have such a profound impact on people's lives?

This interactive and engaging workshop explores:

  • the meaning and feeling of creativity through storytelling
  • how storytelling can enrich health and community
  • how storytelling works with people with dementia and memory loss
  • the specific steps of the TimeSlips storytelling method
  • how and why to share the stories (artifacts of creative engagement)
  • how to sustain and grow a creative engagement program.

Registration fee is $80 and covers the cost of the training supplies, including a sample image kit, training manual, and DVD. See www.timeslips.org for more on the method.
