"Make a Difference" Volunteer Workshop Focuses on Animals and People
Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens
 | | | Delta Society volunteers and their furry friends bring smiles to patients. | | On March 25, the Seattle Mayor’s Office for Senior Citizens offers a free workshop entitled "Make a Difference...Volunteer with Animals," intended to inspire older adults who have a passion for dogs, cats and other critters to get involved with local organizations that work with animals. The public and media are welcome to attend. "Animals inspire our healing and learning, and soothe and nurture our spirits," said program coordinator Patti-lyn Bell. "Our workshop speakers will describe a variety of roles that will help volunteers and others lead a fuller, richer life." Bell pointed out that volunteers don't need to own a pet to participate. A variety of organizations help connect volunteers with animals in meaningful ways. Workshop speakers include: - Sandi Ackerman from Best Little Rabbit, Rodent and Ferret House, which provides sanctuary and adoption services for rabbits, rodents, guinea pigs and ferrets.
- JoAnn Turnbull and Jill Bentler from Delta Society, which focuses on improving human health through therapy and service animals.
- Becky Bishop from Reading with Rover, which uses dogs to inspire children to discover the joy of reading and gain confidence in their literacy.
- Kara Main-Hester from Seattle Animal Shelter, which saves the lives of thousands of animals of all kinds every year.
"Make a Difference...Volunteer with Animals" is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Central Building (810 3rd Ave., between Columbia & Marion in downtown Seattle).
