Draft Pedestrian Plan Available for Review
Jennifer Wieland, Associate Transportation Planner, Seattle Department of Transportation
Later this week, Mayor Greg Nickels will announce the release of Seattle's draft Pedestrian Master Plan. The plan aims to establish Seattle as the most walkable city in the nation through its goals of safety, equity, vibrancy, and health. The plan looks at the needs of pedestrians of all ages across the city and helps to identify and prioritize projects in areas with the greatest need. The plan provides direction for City staff, private developers, and individual property owners, and it includes a range of information and tools for use in your community. It's likely that you have already been a part of the plan's development, possibly by responding to a survey or participating in a roundtable discussion. Now that a draft is complete, SDOT needs to hear from you again. Seattle's Pedestrian Master Plan is a web-based plan, available here. You are invited to review the plan and provide feedback in the coming weeks; comments will be accepted through June 15. Additionally, SDOT staff and members of the plan's citizens' advisory group will meet with community groups and participate in many events across the city during the comment period. You can find a list of meetings and events at the link above. On May 11 and 12, you are invited to two special events featuring Mark Fenton, former host of the PBS show America's Walking. SDOT is partnering with the Department of Parks and Recreation to host a lunchtime event on May 11, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the Microsoft Auditorium at the Central Library. On May 12, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Union Station, SDOT will partner with Sound Transit to host a second event with Mr. Fenton to celebrate the launch of the plan. These events are free and open to the public, and more information will be released in the next few days.
