Honoring Our Parents: Understanding Aging & Finding Supports

Three GenerationsUnderstanding changes in your aging parents is important to help them connect with the most suitable resources. What is normal aging and what might be part of an illness? How can you detect depression or substance abuse? What services are available and how much do they cost? This workshop will provide critical knowledge for planning ahead and working with your parents to make informed decisions.

Northeast Seattle Retirement Community Fair

Retirees looking for their next place to live will get all of their questions answered at the free Northeast Seattle Retirement Community Fair on Saturday June 20, 2009.

This one-stop shopping event, hosted by Northwest Prime Time, brings together 18 retirement communities and senior housing providers in the greater Northeast Seattle area. The fair offers attendees the chance to compare and contrast their retirement living options in one geographic area. Retirees are invited to bring their adult children, and Baby Boomers are invited to bring their retired parents to help make housing decisions that will take them into their senior years.

Parking is free and readily available. Tours of nearby retirement communities will be available following the fair. Visit the Northwest Prime Time website for more information.

National Co-Housing Conference: Growing Community

June 24-28
University of Washington

Whether you already live in co-housing or want to learn more about it, this conference is a great venue for anyone interested in co-housing and community oriented development. There will be many great sessions throughout the conference and a fabulous line-up of general session speakers who will talk about inspiring community led design projects.
 
There are several pre-conference and low-cost workshops for those who may not have the time or funds to attend the full conference. Included are:

  • Senior Co-Housing (June 24-25) is a two-day workshop by Chuck Durrett will help participants examine issues related to aging and aging in place, within the context of a safe and comfortable environment of inquiry and discovery and in the context of co-housing. 
  • Co-housing 101 (June 26) is an ideal and low-cost ($20) primer for newcomers to co-housing.
  • Integrating Affordable Units into Co-Housing (June 26 from 8:30 to noon) is a free session which will highlight a few UW architecture student projects.

Almost Home: Changing Aging in America

Are you an elder, a family caregiver, a spouse/partner of a person with memory loss, daughter or son of an aging parent?  Almost Home, a 90-minute film by Brad Lichtenstein and Lisa Gildehaus, shown on PBS Independent Lens, is a documentary profiling the real stories of lives touched by aging. Meet and greet the filmmaker, Brad Lichtenstein, view the film, and learn about ways to "age better," caregiving, long-term care facilities, and local resources.

Sound Steps Half Marathon and 10k Walk

Sunday, June 28, 7:30 a.m.
Gas Works Park
Seattle

 
Join other active adults age 50+ for a double loop "Half Marathon" walk around Lake Union! This family-friendly, untimed event features light refreshments, live music, raffle prizes and awards for finishers. Complete the half marathon, a 13.1 mile goal (just over two laps), or do one lap for a 6.2 mile (10k) walk.

$25 suggested Registration Fee, or only $15 if you already have the Spring Training t-Shirt. Bring your friends and family to cheer you on (no additional cost). Extra t-shirts will be available to them for purchase. The Sound Steps Half Marathon is hosted by Seattle Parks and Recreation and is a Northwest Senior Games event.
