The American Music Therapy Association promotes the use of music in therapeutic settings.

A recent article from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Healthfinder.gov discusses the effectiveness of music therapy for patients who are coping with pain.

Also highlighted on the Healthfinder website: a recent report from Temple University suggests that cardiac patients can reduce their heart rates and blood pressure by listening to music.  And this just in: an Italian study suggests that music may be used in new therapies for heart patients.
