Attend one or all ten of these special sessions. They are open to anyone who wants to proactively prepare for their own aging or that of a friend or family member. Remaining sessions include:

  • Care Management
  • Holistic Wellness.

HOPE Conference on Parkinson's

The Northwest Parkinson's Foundation, the American Parkinson's Disease Association Washington Chapter and APDA Information & Referral Center are pleased to present the 2009 HOPE Conference on Parkinson's.

Now in its fourth year, the conference is the largest gathering of its kind in the Northwest, drawing over 600 attendees from 11 states. In addition to highlighting some of the most recent advances in Parkinson's treatment and care, the conference gives patients and families, who are often isolated or withdrawn as a result of their symptoms, an opportunity to connect with others who are making their own journey with Parkinson's and find new sources of hope and inspiration.

Safe & Sound: How to Prevent Medication Mishaps

The National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) is hosting an event to encourage family caregivers to speak up for themselves and their loved ones. "Safe & Sound: How to Prevent Medication Mishaps" is a national Teleclass/Webinar scheduled for November 12. This free class is for those taking care of loved ones who are elderly, taking multiple medications, seeing more than one doctor, or suffering from multiple illnesses. See the NFCA website for more information.

Aging Well Book Club and Conversation on Aging

The Aging Well Book Club and Conversation on Aging is a new learning and community-building opportunity for older adults, sponsored by the King County Library System. 

Aging Well will meet on third Saturdays from 10:00-12:00 a.m. at the Snoqualmie Library, 7824 Center Blvd SE, Snoqualmie. This library is located just off Snoqualmie Parkway (directions).

Books for the November and December meetings are:

  • November 21: The Third Chapter: Passion, Risk and Adventure in the 25 Years After 50 by Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot (Farrar, Straus and Giroux; 1st edition, January 2009).
  • December 19:  The Older the Fiddle, The Better the Tune: The Joys of Reaching a Certain Age by Willard Scott & Friends (Hyperion Books, 2003).

Embracing Complexity: Overcoming Challenges to Improve Transitional Care

Featuring Dr. Eric Coleman, known as the "Transitions Guru," regarding the evidence-based practice of transitions management, as well as policy development and implementation at the national level. He will update the Northwest audience on the current research and policy issues, as well as challenge Seattle to continue as a leader in the future.

Dr. Coleman's research focuses on: (1) enhancing the role of patients and caregivers in improving the quality of care transitions across acute and post-acute settings; (2) measuring quality of care transitions from the perspective of patients and caregivers; (3) implementing system-level quality improvement interventions; and (4) using health information technology to promote safe and effective care transitions.
