Welcome to the November 2010 Seniors Digest!

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and Aging and Disability Services Director Pamela Piering discuss some of the issues facing local seniors during the recent Mayor's Council for African American Elders legislative breakfast. President Obama has just proclaimed November as National Family Caregivers Month, honoring the 65 million family caregivers in our nation. These family and friends who provide care for senior and disabled loved ones are the front line of our long-term care system. This year's theme is "Reach Out for Help." National Family Caregivers Association president Suzanne Mintz reminds us that this is the 10th anniversary of the National Family Caregivers Support Program—the first piece of legislation to create a nationwide support program for caregivers. Mintz also emphasizes how important it is to reach out to family caregivers, who are being challenged by cutbacks in support programs at every level.

Another important reminder: Medicare Open Enrollment runs from November 15 through December 31. Kirk Larsen of Social Security reminds us that 'tis the season to examine your Medicare supplemental plan and prescription drug plan (Medicare Part D).
