National Ballroom Dance Week Celebrated
Margaret Casey, ADS Planner
The Aging and Disability Services Area Plan on Aging cites several studies that have shown strong correlations between social activity and improved health and well being. In an effort to focus on the many aspects of healthy aging, we invite you to take advantage of the Seattle area National Ballroom Dance Opportunity, September 25 - October 9, 2004. What better way to get started improving your health than to take advantage of all the wonderful free demonstrations, music, and dance classes? This is a great way to meet people, socialize and have fun. What other form of recreation combines social interaction, exercise, personal expression, the stimulation of learning new things, as well as the emotional thrill of dancing in the arms of a partner to compelling music? Whether your fancy runs to the red-hot Latin dances...the classic elegance of the smooth ballroom dances...the high energy of swing dances, or all of the above, there's something for you. Ballroom dancing can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels. The many dance studios in Seattle will open their classes and studios to newcomers most free of charge during this event. On Saturday, September 25, the Seattle Center will host a high energy Gala Kickoff in the Center House from 7:30 - 11:00 p.m. The event is open to the public and is completely free! Engaging instructors will be on hand to teach beginners salsa and cha cha, two very popular dances in Seattle right now. If swing's your thing, don't miss the swing demonstrations. Romantics will enjoy elegant traditional ballroom numbers demonstrated by skilled social dancers, as well as costumed competitive couples. Then, the action will heat up with Latin dancing performances, including a demonstration of the hugely popular Argentine tango. Best of all, there will be lots of people to dance with during the social dancing portions of the evening, especially once you get those lessons under your belt. The whole evening has been designed as a special welcome and introduction for those new to dancing, as well as a celebration for aficionados. You don't need a partner just come on down!
