Volunteer Opportunities

Senior Services of Seattle-King County offers opportunities to serve seniors in our area as a volunteer. For a list of organizations that seek volunteers, go to the Senior Services Volunteer Opportunities web page. You can even fill out an application online!

Another good place to begin your search for volunteer opportunities is U.S. SeniorCorpswhich is part of Americorps, a network of national service programs that is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service. Opportunities include the Foster Grandparents Program, Senior Companions, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

The U.S. Government's FirstGov portal website includes Public Service and Volunteerism, a directory of organizations and government agencies that seek volunteers.

The U.S. Administration on Aging also maintains a directory of volunteer opportunities, including contact information and web links.

On January 17, the Martin Luther King Day of Service honors the life of Dr. King by encouraging Americans of every age and background to "Make It a Day On, Not a Day Off."

And just for fun...

Did your ancestor come through Ellis Island when emigrating from the Old Country? If he or she did or if you're not sure but would like to find out check out the Ellis Island websitewhere you can search their database and even see the actual ledger where an official signed them in. Free registration only takes a minute. The Ellis Island Museum website offers "The Immigrant Experience" and much more information about this fascinating period in U.S. History.
