Prepare for the Season

The October issue of Seniors Digest featured information and tips about emergency preparedness. In these winter months, even though the climate in our area is relatively mild, we do have the occasional cold snap and snowstorm. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers Winter Preparedness Safety Tips for taking care of yourself and your home during severe cold, or when traveling in the mountains or other colder areas.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers information about identifying and preventing hypothermia. General information about special cold weather concerns of older adults can be found on the National Institute on Aging's Age Pages.

For information about the wind chill factor and protecting yourself in cold weather, see the CDC's Extreme Cold Guide. The National Weather Service website also includes information and a wind chill calculation chart

To help keep your holidays safe and happy, the Federal Citizen Information Center has come up with Tips and Suggestions for Holiday Safety. Other featured articles from the Federal Citizen Information Center site deal with safe holiday festival decorations, food preparation tips, shopping securely, selecting safe toys for grandchildren, and more.
