Save the Date! The Seattle/King County Advisory Council on Aging and Disabilities presents a legislative forum: "Supporting Vulnerable Adults: How Do the Federal and State Budgets Reflect Our Values?" Wednesday, August 23, 2006 from 9:00 am to 3:00 p.m. Olympic Room, Seattle Center
This will be a day-long forum packed with information and action steps provided by state legislators and policy experts. Initial sponsors include United Way, Sound Transit and Service Employees Union International. Details to follow in the July and August issues of Seniors Digest!
Elder Abuse For more information on the Victim of Crimes Assistance (VOCA) and Senior Rights Assistance Programs, call (206) 448-5720 or go to www.seniorservices.org/SRA/sra.asp. The National Center on Elder Abuse (www.elderabusecenter.org), funded by the U.S. Administration on Aging, is a gateway to resources on elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. The site includes a full list of state elder abuse hotlines. The U.S. Administration on Aging website includes resources and information about elder abuse in their Elder Rights and Resources Center. Staying Safe on the Internet OnGuardOnline.gov is a new website developed by a consortium of government agencies (including the Federal Trade Commission, Homeland Security and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service). The site includes easy-to-understand information about safe auctions, phishing, spyware and other scams.
The Federal Trade Commission's Identity Theft webpage is a good place to begin in protecting yourself from identity theft and other online scams. It offers information about what to do if you think you've been victimized. The FTC also offers the article "How Not to Get Hooked by a Phishing Scam," and a lively, interactive "phishing" tutorial.
Microsoft's At Home Security web section offers information about keeping your personal computer safe from viruses, spyware and other threats to online security.
