* More About Senator Pat Thibaudeau The Seattle-King County Advisory Council on Aging is pleased to present its first Louise Parry Humanitarian Award to Senator Pat Thibaudeau in recognition of her incredible record of achievement and dedication to human services. The presentation will take place at the Legislative Forum on August 23. Senator Thibaudeau will retire from the Washington State Senate when her term ends this year. She first ran for office in 1992 and was elected to the State House of Representatives. She was appointed to her current Senate seat in 1995 and then ran successfully three times to secure her role as Senator of the 43rd District. Her life has been dedicated to bringing change through political activism, whether as a lobbyist, an elected official or a community organizer. She has always been a champion for seniors and people with disabilities, children, end of life care, and disenfranchised groups. She was a prominent leader in the women's rights movement. Senator Thibaudeau is a formidable advocate for social justice, and she brought this perspective into her work as an elected official, working tirelessly to promote a broad based human rights agenda. Senator Thibaudeau is currently Co-Chair of the Blue Ribbon Commission to Improve Access to Affordable Quality Health Care, and she has been a leader in promoting access to health care and mental health services in Washington State. Community service organizations in Washington State and in her home district have recognized her contributions over the years with numerous awards, including: Washington Rural Health Association Award; Wonderful Older Woman Award, Older Women's League, 2002; Lifelong AIDS Alliance Governor's Award, 2001; Northwest Women's Law Center Award; Bailey Boushay Citizen Award; Youth Care 1995 Outstanding Community Advocate Award; and Certificate of Recognition from Washington Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The Louise Parry Humanitarian Award was created to honor the life and work of labor activist Louise Parry. Mrs. Parry died this past June at age 85, following a life that was dedicated to improving human rights and promoting social justice. Wow, we've sure had some hot days lately! We hope everyone is managing to stay cool during this record-breaking summer. Things are heating up with senior advocates as well, as we prepare for the August 23 Legislative Forum in Olympia. We hope for a great turnout for this important event.
