Welcome to the December 2008 Seniors Digest

Houston Brown in Santa Hat

Advisory Council Member Houston Brown wishes you happy—and healthy—holidays! Read on for two classic holiday recipes that have received Houston’s signature nutritional makeover.

This issue we are pleased to announce the return of Houston Brown’s Cooking Corner! Houston has been focusing on making a full recovery from both hip and knee replacements during 2008. But now he is back in full force, ready to inspire us to do ourselves a favor by making smart nutrition choices, even during the temptation-rich holiday season. Together with the accompanying "Cardiologist Offers 10 Tips for a Heart-Healthy Season," these suggestions should help us sail into 2009 without too many holiday surprises showing up on the scale…or in our cholesterol count.

Exercise is another important component of healthy aging. Read about Seattle's Pedestrian Master Plan, which seeks to make our city a more walking-friendly place, helping seniors remain safe and active.

Also in this issue…

  • "Project Share: Neighbors Helping Neighbors for 25 Years" tells how we can help City Light customers in need keep their homes lighted and warm.

  • "What Does the Economic Downturn Mean for Seniors?" examines the current economic crisis and how it impacts older adults.

  • Give your brain a workout with this month’s word scramble, "Stay Connected."
