New Preventive Benefits Added to Medicare

image

Medicare has historically focused on coverage for health problems after they occur. Over the past few years, however, Medicare has added new screening and preventive coverage. As of 2005, people with Medicare can take advantage of three important new benefits added to the preventive benefits package:

1. The "Welcome to Medicare" Physical

For people whose Medicare Part B coverage began on or after January 1, 2005, Medicare  covers a one-time preventive physical exam. Note: This exam must occur within the first six months of enrolling in Part B. The physical includes:

  • Blood pressure, height and weight check
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Vision test
  • Wellness education
  • Other covered tests your physician orders

2. Cardiovascular Screening

Medicare will now pay for cholesterol testing and related blood fat measurements.

3. Diabetes Screening

For those at risk of diabetes, Medicare will now pay for up to two diabetes tests per year (Fasting Plasma Glucose Test). Medicare also covers certain supplies and self-management training to find and treat the disease.

These new benefits are in addition to the preventive benefits that were already available, including:

  • Cancer Tests
    • Breast Cancer Screening (Mammograms)
    • Cervical and Virginal Cancer Screening
    • Colon Cancer Screening
    • Prostate Cancer Screening
  • Immunizations

    • Flu
    • Pneumococcal
    • Hepatitis B
  • Bone Mass Measurement (for Osteoporosis)

  • Glaucoma Screening

  • Education about unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, inactivity and poor diet

Of the increased emphasis on wellness and prevention, former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said, "For too long, Medicare only paid for benefits after you got sick. Now, Medicare will pay for benefits that will help seniors prevent the onset of disease before it becomes serious." Secretary Thompson added, "These new changes bring Medicare into the 21st century of medicine."

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, many Medicaid patients have not taken full advantage of wellness care coverage. If you or a loved one has Medicare, take the time to find out about and utilize these important benefits! And if you have just begun Medicare, or are about to do so, be sure to schedule your "Welcome to Medicare" physical within the first six months.
