Aging in Place Fair Save the Date!

November 6 - 12 is National Aging in Place Week. Join the experts at Seattle's Annual Aging in Place Resource Fair on Saturday, November 12 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Seattle Center House to see how Baby Boomers and older adults can create safe and comfortable home environments as they age. Find information and demonstrations on everything from finance options and contractors programs to innovative products. And door prizes too! Contact Margaret Casey for more information.

Emergency Preparedness

The Red Cross website offers information on disaster preparedness, including "Preparing for Disaster for People with Disabilities and other Special Needs" and "Disaster Preparedness for Seniors By Seniors," which includes a 20-page online booklet you can browse or print out (PDF format).

To find out how to prepare for specific emergencies, and what to do before, during and after a disaster, see the 204-page booklet from FEMA entitled "Are You Ready: an In-Depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness." You can browse or print out the entire PDF document here. FEMA also offers information on Assisting People with Disabilities in a Disaster.

More information is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Emergency Preparedness and Response website and from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's consumer site, www.ready.gov. The Department of Health and Human Services website also features "Disasters and Emergencies," a comprehensive list of resources.

New Sleep Information Resource

The National Sleep Foundation website has just added an entertaining, easy-to-use multimedia program, "Cycles of Sleeping and Waking with the Doze Family." The animated, interactive program examines how sleep is impacted by our daily routine, lifestyle, and age. The site also includes "Sleep and Aging."
