Pedestrian Safety

The Washington State Department of Transportation's Walking in Washington webpage includes tips about safe walking, including "Safety Tips for Pedestrians."

The Highway Safety Research Center offers information about "Making Streets Safe for Seniors on Foot"

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center features information and links on senior pedestrian safety.

Avoiding Fraud and Scams

The Federal Trade Commission website includes information for consumers about avoiding scams and rip-offs, including avoiding identity theft.

See the U.S. Postal Inspection Service website for information about avoiding fraud. The site contains specific information about fraud targeting seniors

The National Internet Fraud Information Center is run by the National Consumers League. Included on the site is ElderFraud, with information to help seniors and their loved ones avoid scams that target older adults.

Health fraud targeting seniors is especially prevalent. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration website includes the article "How to Spot Health Fraud." Another good website to help you avoid falling for health fraud is Quackwatch.

The AARP website's "Consumer Fraud" section includes detailed information about scams and how to avoid them.

Fitness for People with Disabilities

In last month's Seniors Digests, we took a look at winter fitness ideas. The Mayo Clinic's Fitness Center website has just released an online slideshow: "Sports and Recreation for People with Disabilities," which includes innovative adaptive sports equipment for snow sports and year-round fitness.
