Safe Walking

Need some inspiration to put on those walking shoes and hit the path? The Partnership for a Walkable America offers the online brochure "Walking as a Way of Life," which explains the many benefits of this form of exercise.

Stepping Out for Mature Adults: Be Healthy, Walk Safely is a website from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that includes articles on pedestrian safety, incorporating walking into your everyday schedule, and staying motivated.

Home Safety and Modification

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers the colorful guide "Check for Safety: a Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults," which you can view online or order.

For more resources, see The National Resource Center on Supportive Housing and Home Modification website, which includes a directory of safety checklists for safety assessment of the home.

May 14-20 is National Nursing Home Week

The American Health Care Association's LongTermCareLiving.com offers information for consumers about choosing, living in and paying for a nursing home.

If you need to select a nursing facility for yourself or a family member, the Medicare website features Nursing Home Compare, a tool for finding and comparing nursing homes in the area. The Washington Healthcare Association website offers a directory of nursing facilities in the state, as well as information and online brochures.

The National Long Term Care Ombudsman Resource Center offers information about serving as or contacting a long-term care ombudsman. Ombudsmen are volunteers who serve as advocates for residents of nursing homes, board and care homes, and assisted living facilities.
