Avoiding Holiday Stress and Depression

The holidays are supposed to be a joyous time of the year, but for some people, the extra workload, dark skies or personal circumstances make this a challenging season. Here are some resources that can help.

The Geriatric Mental Health Foundation offers Coping with Depression and the Holidays,” a factsheet of information and tips for seniors who may be experiencing sadness due to such causes as the passing of time, the absence of parents, siblings and friends who have died, or the distance of loved ones who have moved away.

Go to the Mayo Clinic Online to read “Stress, Depression and the Holidays: 12 Tips for Coping,” practical tips to minimize stress and depression and enjoy the holidays; and “Beating Seasonal Affective Disorder,” suggestions on managing our mood during dark winter days.

For more suggestions, see the article “Holiday Stress Busting” in the December 2004 issue of Seniors Digest.
