Finding Your "Next Chapter"
Joanne Donohue, Vice-President of Senior Services
Next Chapter of Puget Sound is a consortium of Seattle community organizations providing meaningful work, service, learning and self-discovery opportunities to those in midlife and beyond. In the next few issues of Seniors Digest, we will share the stories of three people who have embarked upon their own next chapter. Antioch University provided an opportunity for Margie King Bloch (right) to discover her Next Chapter. Margie was designing curriculum for a community leadership program when she returned to school to complete a Bachelor’s degree in transformational leadership through Antioch. In her first year in the program, Bloch experienced cancer for a second time. But during six months of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, she missed only one class. Bloch says, “I developed my voice as a writer and began to appreciate the gift of insight that cancer gave me. The faculty and my fellow students showed extraordinary care and support and I will always be grateful for that experience." Bloch’s experience in the Bachelor’s degree completion program led her to an Antioch Master’s degree in whole systems design with a focus on servant leadership. Today, she works in fund development for the Leadership Institute of Seattle. Bloch sat on many city and organizational boards both before and after her Antioch experience. “Most of life seems to be about building the skills and capacities to work effectively with others to get things done," she says. “That’s what I learned at Antioch.” What will your Next Chapter be? - Mark your calendar for Tuesday, June 26 to hear Marc Freedman, President of Civic Ventures, talk about his new book, Encore: Finding Work that Matters in the Second Half of Life.
