Conference for Caregivers: Practical Tools for Daily Caregiving

KitchenOn Monday, June 4, Washington State Aging and Disability Services Administration and ElderHealth Northwest, with the support of numerous community organizations, will again sponsor a day-long conference for caregivers, Challenges in Caregiving: Giving Care, Taking Care. The conference will be held in Tukwila, Washington at the Tukwila Community Center.

The conference is for in-home caregivers, people who provide personal care or assist another person with health care. Caregivers who will benefit from the conference are:
  • Family caregivers (spouses, adult children, parents of adults with disabilities, or other relatives)
  • In-home caregivers (home care aides, individual providers)
  • Adult family home providers
  • Adult day care or Assisted Living facility staff
  • Geriatric mental health service workers

We're very excited to present our keynote speaker for this year, Dr. Donna Benton, Executive Director of the Caregiver Resource Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Benton will share tips on making the caregiving experience a positive one for everyone involved, the use of humor, and the importance of respite. Her wealth of experience comes from years of training on caregiving topics, and her own personal experience as a family caregiver.

This conference offers a broad range of topics, allowing caregivers to choose the information they need most. Ideas are practical, and caregivers can immediately put them to use in their own home or work situation. In addition, over 40 exhibitors will provide resource information about products and services that are available to assist caregivers in Washington state.

Other important topics for caregivers will be:

  • Managing stress
  • Back injury prevention
  • Coping with the difficult emotions of caregiving
  • Legal and financial planning
  • Family conflict and cooperation
  • Challenging behaviors in adults with developmental disabilities
  • Effective communication skills with dementia behaviors
Each year this conference is a sellout. Audiences are enthusiastic about the easy to use tips they learn, and feedback from past conferences has been overwhelmingly positive.

The Early Registration fee for individual caregivers (family members, individual COPES or chore providers) is $25.
