Welcome to the February 2008 Seniors Digest!

Greetings, Everyone!

Sandra Jo PalmIn this first issue of Seniors Digest that I am honored to host as the Advisory Council Chair, it seems to me that the overriding theme is empowerment! Artist Sandra Jo Palm expresses it so well when she says, “The secret that most of us elders share is that we relish this time of life!" I wish we could share all of Sandra Jo’s artwork with you…but you will just have to attend her gallery show at the Central Area Senior Center to enjoy all her masterworks.

On a related note, did you know that research shows that creative activity—such as participating in the arts—benefits the mind, body and spirit in a multitude of ways? See “Art Benefits the Spirit...and Body!” to learn about the many functions of art in aging.

Also highlighting the theme of empowerment, Al Poole of the Seattle Human Services Department reflects on his experiences and role models, in honor of African American History Month.

Mobility is another form of empowerment. If you are an older adult or person with disabilities and are facing transportation challenges, the Senior Shuttle Program may be just the thing to get you out and about again!
