2007 Positive Images in Aging Award ElderServe Champions for Aging Every year for the past 18 years, ElderServe has promoted an event for the community entitled “Champions for Aging.” It is an opportunity for the community to recognize, get to know and honor an individual who is considered a champion for older adults in our community. The event is attended by a wealth of community leaders, advocates and friends. At the event, not only are they introduced to a very special person who has championed aging issues and causes, but they also get to learn more about older adult issues, aging in general, and programs and services needed in the community to facilitate the health and wellness of older persons. These individuals have the opportunity to see aging in many lights, but especially from a positive perspective of positive aging. 2007 Corporate Partner Award Travel Training Program developed with TARC KIPDA, in partnership with TARC (Transit Authority of River City), is offering a free of charge travel training for persons 60 years of age and older. The objective of this educational program is to help older adults to develop skills that will allow them to maintain or regain their independence by using public transportation. The training utilizes a video that helps individuals with disabilities and seniors to learn how to safely board and depart buses. Elderly persons who are unfamiliar with the TARC fixed route bus system may not be comfortable using public transportation. The travel training will help them build the confidence and skills to safely and comfortably use the available transit system. In addition, participants in the training session have the opportunity to ride a bus and experience the accessibility features.
