On Saturday, May 31, 2008 KIPDA presented the first Grandparent Raising Grandchildren Conference.  The Conference was held at the University of Louisville Shelby Campus in the Founders Union.  The conference, entitled “Growing Together: A Conference for Grandparents/ Relative Caregivers,” focused on several topics that would better equip grandparents in raising their grandchildren.

Opening presenter Asa Demessie of JADAC spoke about the “Power of Words.” One conference attendee described him as “inspirational.”  Asa urged each attendee to choose carefully the words they use with their grandchildren, because the words they use will impact their grandchild’s life significantly.

Keynote speaker Dr. Clifford Kuhn, “The Laugh Doctor,” spoke about “How to Remain Resilient and Flexible without Losing Sight of Important Principles and Goals.” Conference attendees described him as “very entertaining and beneficial.” Stated one grandparent in attendance, “I can’t look at him without smiling.” Dr. Kuhn stressed the importance of smiling.  He stated that smiling will improve your health and draw positive energy your way.

There was also a Post-Conference Session on Journaling, presented by Sharon Cecil of WE SURVIVE, Inc. Sharon stated that we all have different experiences, and that writing is a powerful tool used for healing and self-awareness through the journey of life. One participant commented, “I HATE WRITING! But the journaling workshop made me take a long hard look at what I am doing and guess what? I am on the right track!  Smile!”

Several breakout sessions were held throughout the day by professionals. The sessions included:

  • Library Services/ Internet Safety
  • Nutrition
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Family Court System: Grandparent Rights and How the System Works
  • Drug and Alcohol Use Prevention
  • Caregiver Stress
  • Legal Issues: Guardianship to Adoption.

Participants were also able to take advantage of individual legal consultations conducted by the Legal Aid Society.

Overall the conference was a success! The attendees were pleased and found the information that was provided to be helpful and informative. As the number of grandparents raising their grandchildren continues to escalate, the need for resources increases as well. KIPDA’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Program provides a host of resources to the community, and we look forward to presenting and sharing in future conferences for Grandparents Raising their Grandchildren.
