Louisville VA Medical Center Launches New Medical Foster Home Program
Tina Strobel, Louisville VAMC
The Louisville VA Medical Center is pleased to announce the development of the Medical Foster Home Program to reach the growing needs of the veteran population. The program offers a safe, long-term, home-like environment and an economical housing alternative for veterans who are unable to remain in their own homes because of health issues. Many veterans live alone and independently for years through the support of assistive devices and home care services. Eventually, though, the veteran many decline to the point that it is no longer safe to live alone. Traditionally this need was resolved by nursing home placement, but the Medical Foster Home offers an alternative to that situation. Medical Foster Home finds caregivers in the community who are willing to take a veteran into their home and provide 24 hour supervision, as well as needed personal care and assistance. The expectation is that this is a long-term commitment, where the veteran may live for the remainder of his or her life. The caregivers are paid based upon the level of care needed, ranging from someone with dementia with some dependence in activities of daily living, to someone who is incontinent and bed bound. The Louisville VA Medical Center is currently searching for individuals who are interested in becoming Medical Foster Home caregivers. Criteria for potential caregivers: - At least 21 years of age
- Own or rent a home and live there with the veteran(s)
- Read, write and speak English
- Complete and pass a Federal Background Check
- Formal or informal care giving experience
- Allow an interdisciplinary treatment team into your home for monthly visits
- Willing to accept, participate in and follow a veteran's treatment plan
