December Celebrations Focus on Tradition

In many cultures, the dreary days of Winter are marked by celebrations that bring joy and an affirmation of life. Do you know the origins of these three festive occasions?

Kwanzaa

Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga originated The African-American holiday of Kwanzaa on December 26, 1966 a time of much struggle for freedom and consideration for African-Americans. Kwanzaa is celebrated between December 26 and January 1, with each day focused on the seven principles, or Nguzo Saba, that have sustained the African culture throughout history.  Kwanzaa is celebrated without ties to any specific religion. This holiday celebrates the unity of black families, enforces connection with African culture and focuses on the seven principles.

Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice, also known as Yule, is celebrated on or about December 22 and marks the shortest day (and longest night) of the year. The ancient Latin word "solstice" means "stop" or "to stand still" and marks the two points when the sun is furthest from the equator, and it appears as though the sun and moon stop their movement across the sky.

The Winter Solstice is a crucial part of the natural cycle, the sun's journey to longer days and renewal and growth of the world after the winter season. Spiritually, it represents one journey coming to an end so that a new path can begin with the coming of spring. The calendar date of Christmas was determined in accordance with the Winter Solstice, uniting the rebirth of the sun with the birth of Christ.

Christmas

The celebration of Christmas was first recorded in 325 A.D. on December 25, a date chosen to convene with the rebirth of the sun or Winter Solstice.  Santa Claus is based on an actual person, St. Nicholas, a Christian leader in the 4th Century A.D.  St. Nicholas was a shy man who did not want to be acknowledged for his generosity.  He once climbed upon a roof and dropped a sack of money down the chimney, which landed in a girl's stocking that was drying by the fire. This deed inspired the holiday traditions that are still common to this day.

Although Santa Claus and presents have become the focus of Christmas, the holiday was created to celebrate the birth of Christ in a manger in Bethlehem. He was proclaimed to be the Son of God. This marked the beginning of Christianity.
