Cool Facts

The expression "Mad as a March Hare" refers to the frenzied capers of the male hare during March.  However, two British scientists studied the behaviors of hares in the spring and found no evidence that male hares go into frenzy during the March mating season, concluding that behavior in March is no different from any other month.

Today, "March Madness" is a description of the excitement surrounding the Illinois state high school basketball tournaments. Henry V. Porter, who started his career as a teacher and coach at Athens High School in central Illinois, coined "March Madness" in an essay that appeared in the Illinois High School Athlete in March of 1939.
