Summer Commitments

Here Comes the Bride!

It's no secret that June is a popular month for getting married. Why? Maybe, like a flower, the summer sun helps love grow? If we look back, people in Europe during the 1500s got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May. Seriously. By June, they were starting to smell, so the brides usually carried a bouquet of flowers to help hide the body odor. Let's hope they also took the bouquet along on the honeymoon!

Are You Overcommitted?

When you made plans with your best friend two weeks ago, you were positive that spending the afternoon relaxing and having cocktails would not be a problem. But, as the date came closer and closer, those plans didn't fit with the other commitments you had already scheduled for the day.  Instead, you arrange to meet for coffee, and once again pledge your time two weeks down the road.

Everyone overcommits. Whether it's taking on too many projects at work or saying we will give time freely to a church or organization...why do we continually make promises we cannot keep?

People generally tend to believe that they will have more time in the future than they do today. Maybe it's because our schedules are always changing. We have different activities filling up each day, making it more difficult to plan our future. If we are asked to commit to doing something today versus doing something weeks from now, we are more likely to agree to the future date. We see some future date as more attainable, leading us to overcommit our time.

So, the next time you try to squeeze an event into your calendar ask yourself...will this really fit into my schedule?

Be committed to making reasonable commitments, not only to others, but also to yourself.

Child's Play

We've all heard the expression "Listen to Your Inner Child."  But what does your inner child offer to the outer adult? How about remembering how to enjoy life? Yes, this thing we call life, that sends us to work, so we can pay bills, and keep commitments, and have far too few days off...the inner child offers us joy and freedom.

Maybe you could ask yourself...what commitments do I have that cause me to be disconnected from what I love and appreciate?

Your inner child will remind you of who you really are not who your parents wanted you to be, not what your teachers labeled you as, not who anyone else expected you to be in your life. When you listen to your inner child, creativity is heightened and appreciation for life is renewed. It's okay to have FUN! Remember that no matter how old we get, there will always be a young one inside of us.
