Independence Daze

Surpassed only by New Year's Eve, the Fourth of July is one of the biggest celebrations of the year. Cities everywhere have music, festivals, parades, and don't forget...fireworks! Much like Christmas, however, the events of the day tend to overshadow the meaning for the holiday in the first place. Thomas Jefferson did not spend months agonizing in a wig and knickers drafting the Declaration of Independence for us to forget its importance to our everyday lives.

Think about times in your life that you have shown independence. Not just when you moved out of your parents' house, or decided to get a Mohawk and turn your hair purple, but truly stepped out on a limb for something or someone and spoke your mind.  Perhaps you enjoy reading controversial editorials or listening to talk radio, or even voicing your political opinion.

All of these have been made possible because of the liberties stemming from the Declaration of Independence. So between hotdogs and slices of watermelon, be sure to pay your respects to what is perhaps the nation's most treasured symbol of liberty.
