Cool Facts

The legend of "Uncle Sam" is thought to have begun in 1812 with a meat packer named Samuel Wilson. Samuel provided meat to the US Army in shipments stamped with the initials "U.S."  It was joked that the initials stood for "Uncle Sam," which eventually led to the idea of Uncle Sam symbolizing the United States government.

Did you know there is not an official designation or meaning for the colors of the flag? However, when the Great Seal of the United States was chosen, these meanings were listed: Red for valor and hardiness, White for purity and innocence, Blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson served on the committee that picked the eagle for the national seal. (Franklin wanted the turkey.)
