Why do some stores sell lottery tickets while others don't?  Do these stores make any money off of it? Jean C.  Sacramento, CA

Lottery tickets are sold at locations like convenience stores, gas stations, and supermarkets. Any business meeting the state standards for financial soundness and integrity is allowed to sell lottery tickets. The store is paid a commission ranging from 5 to 8 percent on every ticket they sell. Businesses are also usually compensated for cashing winning tickets, awarded bonuses when they sell a ticket that wins a major prize, or rewarded for exceeding sales goals.
