Two Parties Highlight SLU's Summer Fun

South Lake Union friends and neighbors showed up in force to celebrate community at two neighborhood block parties in early August.  About 500 residents partied at the Ninth Annual Cascade Block Party on the National Night Out Against Crime hosted by the Cascade People’s Center and organized by Center volunteers. While dancing to live music, enjoying complimentary barbecue, the “bouncy castle” for the younger set, the community enjoyed a great party. Volunteers organized the event with the support and in-kind donations from Whole Foods, Immanuel Community Services, Franz Bakery, Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, City Hardware, and Goods for the Planet.

A high point of the evening that connected both block parties was the “Whole Foods Market Audacious Burger Challenge Preliminaries” judged by neighborhood dignitaries. Residents Jeffrey Rowe and Matt Wyche took top honors and went on to compete with some of the city’s best professional chefs in the “Whole Foods Market Audacious Burger Challenge” at the South Lake Union block party held later in the week. The grilling showdown winner was Seastar and Raw Bar restaurant with their Angus Beef Mushroom Burger with Porcini Mushroom Spread.

 About 4,000 people turned out for a rockin’ good time at the Fifth Annual SLU Block Party. Fifteen local eateries provided tasty dishes and the Cascade Farmer’s Market featured local offerings throughout the day. Music provided by live local bands helped the beat go on. The SLU party included the second annual Discover Wine event, which included 12 wine tastes and appetizers. Little ones enjoyed everything from a paper airplane contest, to the classic pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey, and even cape and tutu-making. Onlookers also enjoyed watching friends and neighbors compete in spaghetti- and watermelon-eating contests.

Proceeds from the day’s sales resulted in a $5,000 donation to the non-profit Immanuel Community Services (ICS), the home of SLU’s only food bank. ICS also operates a community lunch, hygiene program, and a residential recovery program, all vital services to the neighborhood. Another  $3,000 was raised for the Junior League of Seattle.

Microsoft served as the event’s presenting sponsor. Whole Foods, Group Health Credit Union, Redhook Brewery, Pemco, Howard S. Wright’s Constructors, and the Seattle Times served as area sponsors.
