Summer Fun in SLU
For fresh produce visit the Cascade Farmers Market, held every Thursday June through September, 3 PM – 7PM, at Minor Ave N between Harrison St & Thomas St. The market, in its second year, is poised for an active season of food and urban agriculture activism. The Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival will be held on July 3 & 4, from 10AM – 6PM, at Lake Union Park. The theme is heritage wooden boats. The ambiance is that of an old-fashioned, down-home waterfront festival where everything is fun, almost everything is free and nothing much is fancy. It's as authentically grassroots American as you can get and has been for the last 33 years. The festival includes visiting vessels, public rides, activities for kids, and live music.
Several free Out to Lunch concerts will be held on Fridays from noon – 1:30PM at 2200 Westlake, which is the plaza above Whole Foods. Enjoy an eclectic mix of jazz, folk, rock and bluegrass. July 16 – The Legacy Quartet w/ Clarence Acox (Jazz) July 23 – Greta Matassa & Susan Pascal (Jazz) July 30 – Glen Phillips from “Toad The Wet Sprocket” (Folk/Rock) August 6 – Chatam County Line (Bluegrass/Alternative County) The free 6th Annual SLU Block Party will be held on August 13 from noon to 11PM. It features delicious food from local restaurants, a burger grilling challenge, farmers market, wine tasting, beer garden, activities for kids, an outdoor movie and much more! Proceeds from this year’s SLU Block Party will benefit Historic Seattle, the only nonprofit dedicated to preserving Seattle and King County’s architectural legacy. Supporting Historic Seattle’s longstanding commitment to protecting our local historic buildings is perfectly aligned with South Lake Union’s own values — a neighborhood whose bright future also honors its rich history. The second annual Lake Union 10K race on August 22 takes place along the Cheshiahud Loop Trail. The trail links segments of the Burke Gilman Trail, runs along Westlake Avenue and within Gasworks and Lake Union Park. Race start and finish is in the parki,ng lot in front of Kenmore Air. The race raises funds to support “Girls on the Run” Puget Sound.
And finally, enjoy the Lake Union Park Grand Opening on September 25 with a free community celebration. Seattle Parks Foundation has completed its $20 million capital campaign to develop 12 acres of green space in the heart of SLU into a waterfront park. Identified over 100 years ago by the Olmsted firm as ideal for an urban waterfront park, the property was acquired over the past 20 years by the City.
