SLU Steetcar Approved by City Council
SLUFAN
There's very exciting news for South Lake Union: the Seattle City Council has given the green light to the South Lake Union Streetcar. The City Council's Transportation Committee had earlier voted to approve and send to the full Council the funding plan to pay for the Streetcar's capital costs and operations and maintenance expenses. That funding package was considered and approved by the City Council yesterday, June 27th. This project calls for a modern streetcar fleet running 2.6 miles from Westlake Center to South Lake Union Park and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The proposed route will tie together Sound Transit light rail, the monorail and the bus tunnel. The goal is to seamlessly connect the South Lake Union, Denny Triangle and Cascade neighborhoods to other Seattle-area neighborhoods. "We believe that the South Lake Union Streetcar will provide that neighborhood with a necessary link to downtown Seattle," said Council President Jan Drago, "and to other public transportation connecting links." SLUFAN is obviously excited to have the Steetcar pass this important milestone. We appreciate all who have given the Streetcar their support. Another great source of information on the Streetcar is the South Lake Union Streetcar page at the Seattle Department of Transportation's web site.
