Immanuel Lutheran Church Completes Renovation Project
SLUFAN
In case you haven't noticed, Immanuel Lutheran Church, a landmark in SLU's Cascade neighborhood, has just completed an exterior makeover repair to the shingle roof and siding and the church's steeple, re-glazing of stained glass windows, foundation repairs, and a lot more. "We were beginning to look like we'd seen better days," says the Reverend Susan Burchfield, Immanuel's pastor, "and that really doesn't paint an accurate picture. In fact, we are a lively congregation building on a 100-year history and making important contributions to this unique urban neighborhood and the wider Seattle community." Immanuel Lutheran, which draws parishioners from all parts of the city, prides itself on a special commitment to diversity and building community. The congregation and church facility support a food bank, residential recovery program, and a community lunch and hygiene program. As is so often true in neighborhood success stories in Seattle, this one involved a labor of love by a group of supporters drawn together for common cause. "There were lots of leaders and heroes within our congregation and among our neighbors," noted Pastor Burchfield. "We probably couldn't have pulled this off, for example, without the help of Charlie Laboda and Phil Fujii at Vulcan and John Savo and Brent Rogers at NBBJ Architects." Vulcan is a major landowner in the South Lake Union neighborhood. NBBJ will be moving its headquarters from Pioneer Square to the Alley 24 project in South Lake Union.
