BioQuest: Hands-on Science for Kids

image

White coat, pocket protector, eyeglasses these are the components of the stereotypical scientist. Through SBRI's BioQuest hands-on science education program, these stereotypes are being broken for high school students, teachers and the community.

BioQuest, located on the first floor of the SBRI Building at 307 Westlake, delivers a stimulating, career-inspiring science education program within the context of global health. It is the only education program in the country hosted within the footprint of an infectious disease research facility providing critical connections between scientists and learners of all ages.

During the 2004-05 academic year, BioQuest engaged more than 1,800 students in learning more about the challenge of improving global health and the hope offered by research being done at SBRI. Nearly 30 high schools visited SBRI for "site explorations," which combine tours of SBRI's labs with hands-on science activities, side-by-side with SBRI researchers.

In addition to site explorations, SBRI also offers through its BioQuest family of programs BioQuest Academy (an intensive 30-hour program for 10 students at a time), student internships and teacher workshops, as well as evenings of science exploration for the community.
