What's New in SLU

On April 4, over seventy people gathered at Seattle Unity Church to talk about key issues in the South Lake Union neighborhood plan update. The South Lake Union neighborhood plan workshop was sponsored by SLUFAN and the Seattle Department of Planning and Development to gather input on strategies to implement the neighborhoods goals.

Planners in the City's Department of Planning and Development (DPD) are working with SLUFAN on an update to the South Lake Union neighborhood plan. The update will build on existing goals for neighborhood character, transportation, parks, and open space. It will be also be adding sustainable development and housing goals. In short, the goal of the plan update is to help South Lake Union be ready for its future as a vibrant, people friendly urban neighborhood.

At the April workshop, participants talked about how to maintain valued aspects of the current neighborhood character, while allowing additional development. They talked about the different features that they would like to see in a future South Lake Union, including schools, trees, preservation of important buildings, and housing for people with a range of incomes.

Ideas from the workshop will be brought back to SLUFAN and other community groups as they review draft strategies for an updated neighborhood plan. Revised strategies and the entire plan package will be the subject for a final neighborhood plan validation meeting to be held later this spring.
