The project site is on ConocoPhillips and City Investor properties located on the city block surrounded by Westlake Avenue North, Mercer Street, Terry Avenue North, and Valley Street. To expedite work, Westlake is currently closed between Mercer and Valley streets, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The following changes remain in place during this time: - Northbound traffic on Westlake Avenue N. is being detoured on to Ninth Avenue.
- On-street parking is temporarily removed along Westlake Avenue N., Republican Street, and Ninth Avenue.
Cleanup of the site has been ongoing since an underground gasoline line leak was first discovered in 1980, and several remediation systems have been used. Numerous environmental studies indicated that the contamination did not reach Lake Union. Due to increased development in the area, ConocoPhillips decided to expedite completion of the cleanup effort. The current cleanup involves excavation and removal of contaminated soil and groundwater, and the installation of underground cleanup systems. The first gift of $500,000 came from The Moccasin Lake Foundation; the second gift of $1 million came from an anonymous donor. Initial construction is underway, with the official groundbreaking scheduled for early spring 2007. The Parks Foundation also recently received some great television press for Lake Union Park. Throughout December, stay tuned to Comcast's Local Edition just before CNN Headline News to see the interview with Karen Daubert, Executive Director, about the exciting changes to the South Lake Union Neighborhood. The foundation has also received media attention on the Seattle Channel (available online by clicking here) and King 5's Evening Edition.
