SLU On-Street Parking Plan
Mary Catherine Snyder, Seattle DOT
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) held two open houses in mid-February to discuss draft plans for paid on-street parking throughout the South Lake Union neighborhood as well as a residential parking zone in Cascade. More than 50 people were in attendance to ask questions and express their concerns. The question came up, why now? Managing the on-street parking will help to: -
Respond to the rapid pace of development -
Ensure parking will be fairly allocated -
Support the City's transportation goals SDOT discussed that this parking plan will create a neighborhood that is an accessible place to live, shop and work. According to SDOT Project Manager, Mary Catherine Snyder, there is general support from residents about the RPZ (residential parking zone) and some retail businesses. SDOT heard concerns from businesses, particularly small and medium-sized companies, that having to pay for parking will be difficult for their employees and their businesses' economic bottom line. Key elements of the draft Parking Management Plan include: -
Implement paid parking from 8 AM to 6 PM, Monday - Saturday -
Management of the on-street parking with parking rates and time limits to encourage turnover and manage long-term parking needs -
Add the resident parking zone to provide a limited amount of residential-designated parking in the area -
Provide new SPD Parking Enforcement resources. SDOT has projected to finalize the parking plan by early April and commence Cascade's residential parking zone in May along with starting the installation of paid on-street parking. The installation is expected to take through the end of 2007. Questions?
