Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Seminars
Explore and experience science first hand at the 2007 Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s second annual Science For Life series. September 20, 2007 kicked off this 4-week series of informational seminars to provide the opportunity for participants with a scientific curiosity to continue their education in an informal, fun and hands-on atmosphere, while interacting with world class researchers. Learn from the experts about how vaccines are created; engage in a dialogue about the facts and fiction of stem cell research; learn why older adults develop cancer more often than younger people; and explore the role genetics may play in behavior. All of these topics are covered throughout the 4-week series of seminars. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Community Relations Manager, Robbie Phillips states: "The Hutchinson Center understands the importance of educating our communities about science and research. The Science for Life series is designed to help non-scientists of all ages learn more about issues that impact everyone, such as vaccine development, stem-cell research, aging and genetics. The Center wants to be a resource for the Puget Sound area we call home." The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has been located in the South Lake Union neighborhood for 15 years. They welcome the community of all ages and educational backgrounds to visit the facility and learn about the life-changing research that is going on in SLU’s backyard. "Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is very excited to offer the Science for Life programs again this fall. Over the past couple of years we've seen a real hunger in the community to learn more about science, and we are happy to open our doors and engage folks in a conversation about the research happening right here in Seattle," says Phillips. Robbie Phillips, Community Relations Manager, reminds interested community members that every session last year had a wait list, so you are encouraged to register early. Last year’s series attracted a range of people from high school students to retirees. Previous participants were impressed with the presentations, commenting that the presenters were engaging, and topics were easy to understand. The Science for Life series runs from September 20 – October 11. Seminars are held on Thursday evenings from 7 PM – 8:30 PM. To register or learn more details visit: www.fhcrc.org/scienceforlife.
