Renewable Fuel Comes to the Neighborhood
The SLU community will take another exciting step on its way to becoming one of the first certified green neighborhoods in the nation when Propel Biofuels opens a new biofuel station in March right in the heart of SLU. "South Lake Union's commitment to sustainability aligns with our company's values; this location will make it a convenient stop for both individuals and fleet traffic looking for easier access to clean fuel," said Rob Elam, founder and president of Propel Biofuels. The 9,000-square-foot station will be located at the southwest corner of Westlake Avenue and Valley Street and will be open 24 hours, seven days a week. Biodiesel can be used in any conventional diesel engine either in pure form or in a blend of any proportion with petroleum diesel. Using biodiesel can decrease your contribution to greenhouse gas emissions by almost 80 percent, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Propel Biofuels is the first biodiesel retailer to offer biodiesel derived from locally grown sustainable feedstock including canola, camilina, switchgrass and soy beans. The company is committed to environmental sensitivity in its design, construction and operation at the SLU location. A green landscaped area will take shape this spring around its four biodiesel dispensers. If you want to see how much you're helping the environment you can use Propel's CleanDrive system that caluculates emissions savings and reports results online for both commercial and individual biofuel users.
