Long Term Care Briefing Resources
VHCA (5/22/2009)
Although the new state fiscal year has yet to begin, VHCA staff are beginning to focus on the upcoming state budget development cycle and specifically the challenges that lie ahead in an environment of continuing economic uncertainty. These challenges will not be easy to address and “all hands on deck” will be needed to convince elected officials and other policymakers that adequate funding for long term care is absolutely critical. As a starting point, we have developed a series of Briefing Notes prepared to assist our members when meeting with candidates or elected officials prior to the general election in November of 2009. The notes will provide members with basic information on each of the selected topics. Members are encouraged to use the notes as an outline for discussion and supplement information based on local experiences as well. We are viewing these initial briefing notes as a work in progress and will likely be tweaking and enhancing them over the next few months. We welcome your comments and suggestions and ask that you forward them to Mary Lynne Bailey or by phone at 804.212.1698. VHCA members will find Long Term Care Briefing Notes covering six topics – The Economic Impact of Virginia Long Term Care Facilities; Virginia Medicaid Long Term Care Reimbursement; Long Term Care Staffing and Workforce; Regulatory Oversight of Long Term Care; Professional Liability Issues for Long Term Care; and Alternatives to Facility-Based Care. VHCA staff are ready to assist members with scheduling candidates and elected officials for a facility visit or to answer any questions about the information in the briefing papers. Please use this opportunity to meet with state legislative candidates prior to the election. All seats in the Virginia House of Delegates along with Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General will be determined during the November elections.
