H1N1 (Swine) Flu Update
VHCA (6/5/2009)
The American Health Care Association (AHCA) and the National Centers for Assisted Living (NCAL) continue to encourage all members to keep residents, staff, volunteers and families aware of the appropriate H1N1 Influenza preventative measures that should be taken, including thoroughly washing hands and covering coughs. The H1N1 Flu remains a serious public health emergency, with 11,054 confirmed and probable cases in 50 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico, as well as 17 deaths. Virginia has reported its first H1N1 related death. Some long term care facilities may determine that they would like to have N95 respirators on hand. Other facilities may conduct a hazard analysis and determine that N95s are not necessary. Regardless, all facilities may want to familiarize themselves now with what is involved in using N95s. It can take time to choose an appropriate respirator, arrange for a qualified trainer, and provide training, fit testing, and medical evaluation for workers using the respirators. Please see AHCA/NCAL’s latest H1N1 Update for more information on N95 respirators and please continue to check their H1N1 (Swine) Flu Resources page for other H1N1 information.
