NPI Compliance Dates Approaching - Act by March 1

The new compliance date for using the National Provider Identifier (NPI) number for all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) covered entities, including long term care organizations, is May 24, 2008. On March 1, 2008, all Medicare FFS 837P and CMS-1500 claims must include an NPI number in the primary provider fields on the claim. On May 23, in keeping with the CMS contingency guidance discussed above, all Medicare providers must use the NPI number only on all HIPAA electronic transactions, paper claims and SPR remittance advice.

CMS will discuss these issues further at a national NPI Roundtable on Wednesday, February 6th from 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. EST. This call will focus on the status of the Medicare implementation and a related question and answer session.
